Taught by Simon Wood. This course examines the role of music in narrative film, from the silent era to the present. Topics include the four functions of film music (atmosphere, psychology, continuity, pacing), the vocabulary for analyzing a score, the evolution of Hollywood scoring from Max Steiner and Bernard Herrmann through John Williams and Hans Zimmer, the use of leitmotifs and temp tracks, diegetic versus non-diegetic sound, and the relationship between composer and director. The course features close analysis of scores from films such as Apollo 13, Psycho, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and Black Panther.
